About Aikido

The martial art of aikido was created in the middle of the 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), known as O-Sensei or Great Teacher.

Aikido means "the way of harmony with energy". In aikido training, we practice overcoming habitual reactions through repetition of martial forms. Aikido students condition their bodies to become supple, balanced, and powerful.

The practice of the martial art of aikido can have a profound effect on your physical presence in the world. With consistent training you will notice your body get stronger and your mind more focused. Aikido is not only a practical art for self-defense, but a means to integrate one's body, mind, and spirit.

Aikido is practiced by people of all ages. Many aikido students find it so rewarding they continue practicing for years or even decades.

The best way to learn more about Aikido is to watch a class. Feel free to visit our dojo during any regularly scheduled class time to attentively observe a class, or contact us with questions.

About Our Dojo

Seattle Aikikai is a Washington State not-for-profit organization offering a full range of aikido classes for adults and children.

The dojo is a member of the United States Aikido Federation, the nation's largest aikido organization, and is recognized by Aikikai Hombu Dojo, the Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

Founded in 1997, our dojo was originally known as Puget Sound Aikikai, and was located in South Lake Union for ten years until we relocated to the Queen Anne neighborhood in 2007. Read our story at USAF news.

Primary instruction is given by chief instructor Malory Graham, 5th Dan Shidoin (Certified Instructor.) Malory started her aikido training in 1988 with Paul Sylvain Sensei and received her Godan rank (5th Dan) from Y. Yamada Shihan in 2008. She also has a close affiliation with instructors Yoko Okamoto Sensei and Chris Mulligan Sensei of Aikido Kyoto. She is a certified Shidoin instructor through The United States Aikido Federation.

"When you walk into a dojo you cross a threshold. You are walking into a space that is unique and special. It is not a gym and it is not a church, but something in between. You feel that you will find something in the dojo that was missing from your life--something that you have been looking for. My job as an instructor is to help facilitate that experience."

Children's Program

Through the practice of aikido, children acquire important life skills that can't be learned in books. In addition to physical fitness and coordination, students also learn the value of focus, teamwork, and discipline, not as abstract concepts but through their own experience.

There are three kids' classes per week: 5:00–5:45 PM Mondays and Thursdays, and 9:00–10:00 AM Saturdays.

Ongoing membership dues are $60 per month. For new students, we offer two month's dues together with a training uniform (a $50 value) for $120.

Please be sure come to the dojo with your child to observe a class and meet the instructors before he or she begins aikido. Feel free to contact us with questions.
